The lake contains approximately 300 billion\u00a0<\/span>meters cubed<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0of carbon dioxide (CO2) and 55-60 billion meters cubed of naturally occurring, economically viable <a href=\"https:\/\/seatech-marine-construction.com\/2021\/12\/01\/seatech-wins-a-contract-for-the-marine-works-for-a-methane-gas-to-power-plant-in-lake-kivu-rwanda\/\">methane gas (CH4)<\/a> accumulated within the lake at depths of 300-450 meters, with hundreds of millions of cubic meters of CH4 added every year.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, SeaTech was appointed to be the contractor for all the offshore works in the project. Since it is classified as an Oil &amp; Gas project, SeaTech acquired Oil &amp; Gas accreditation from
